Choosing Joy over Despair: The Educator’s Task in Troubled Times

Quote from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book Braiding Sweetgrass

Kimmer speaks of an outlook I wished my teacher would have shared with me as a child.

"I choose joy over despair. Not because I have my head in the sand, but because joy is what the earth gives me daily and I must return the gift. --We are deluged by information regarding our destruction of the world and hear almost nothing about how to nurture it. It is no surprise then that environmentalism becomes synonymous with dire predictions and powerless feelings. Our natural world inclination to do right by the world is stifled, breeding despair when it should be inspiring action. The participatory role of people in the well-being of the land has been lost, our reciprocal relations reduced to a KEEP OUT sign" (Kimmer 2013, p.327).

New Student Introduction to Educator Licensure (Required for New Licensure Students)
Candidates will receive an overview of the path to licensure at Goddard College. It is informed by our progressive educational model and works hand in hand with state and federal requirements to allow each candidate to develop their own holistic approach to educator licensure.

Goddard College faculty members work with candidates to discover their interests and goals, and from there a personalized approach to courses, or areas of study, culminating in a semester study plan. Our program is proficiency-based in which candidates progress toward their certification and degree based on their ability to demonstrate mastery of a comprehensive set of skills, knowledge, behaviors, and mindsets at multiple times in multiple ways. Each semester, candidates complete 5 (BA) or 4 (MA) areas of study and demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. They curate their best work in the two portfolios, the Vermont Licensure Portfolio and an Endorsement Portfolio based on the type of teaching license they are seeking.

How did Montessori education go from serving and benefitting children from working-class families to serving and benefitting children from wealthy families? This workshop will use a historical framework in which to define the 3 disticnt waves of Montessori education. Social and Emotional Learning: Getting Kids Ready to Learn and Ready to Live, with graduating student Cathy Miller. All students deserve to be educated in way that supports growth and learning, but not all children come to school each day ready to learn. And amongst the group of students who do show up ready, support and development of their social and emotional literacy will enhance their ability to learn and to lead. While the importance of social and emotional learning (SEL) has been widely recognized in the early childhood education (ECE) sphere, in recent years educators and administrators of elementary, middle, and high schools are seeing the value of including SEL in their schools and classrooms. Although schools consider social and emotional learning (SEL) valuable, many approaches to incorporating SEL seem piece-meal and disconnected, and expectations and goals for implementation are often unclear. My school had adopted three different SEL curricula, each targeting a different skill set, and it felt like a daunting task to add them to an already jam-packed daily schedule. My work this semester has focused on understanding the multiple functions of SEL and integrating them into the school day at the most appropriate place and time. By using SEL as an organizing principle for my teaching, I hope to center this valuable aspect of teaching and learning in my practice in a way that augments rather than sacrifices instruction and student growth.

Exploring a Theoretical Base for Designing Project Based Learning for Students with Behavioral Challenges, with graduating student Mackenzie Ramsdell.  I will be discussing my Project Based Learning science unit, A Guide to Past Life and how it reaches students with behavioral challenges and varying academic abilities. This project is designed with specific students in a program for students with emotional, social and behavioral issues in mind, but is intended to be a tool that could be modified for different groups of students. I will have work completed by these students as examples.

Outdoor Space: Why it matters, with graduating student Rose Hammerman.  How does social context influence outdoor play environments, and how do play environments affect childhood.

School Garden Sustainability, with graduating student Sara Colhoun.  School gardens are increasingly popular, but present unique challenges in regards to sustainability and best practices. I will share examples of resources and partnerships that help school gardens to thrive, and most effectively serve students in the long run.

Water and Education in the West: The Case for using Place- based education to Address Water Scarcity in Colorado, with graduating student Stacy Wolff.  My thesis explores the impact of population growth and climate change on water resources in Colorado and the Western United States. There is an increasing disparity between water availability and demand as outlined by The Colorado Water Plan which is supported by the scientific principles of meteorology and hydrology. Education is a key component of the Water Plan to ensure that our citizens understand how they are connected in the community. This paper outlines the history of Project Based Learning (PBL) and current iterations of it, including place-based education (PBE). Research from numerous publications provide the data to support PBE as a viable method of instruction in formal education. While exact methodology for curriculum development varies, an emphasis on four publications provides the guidance needed to craft a PBE unit grounded in Next Generation Science Standards to address the educational component of the Colorado Water Plan.

Understanding Our Digital Age and the Importance of Nature Play
This presentation will be an in-depth look at my thesis, Understanding Our Digital Age and the Importance of Nature Play. This thesis explores the adverse effects of prolonged use of digital technologies in schools and homes by students, and how that translates into greater societal dysfunctions seen in adults as well. This thesis, an Autoethnographic Narrative Phenomenology, follows an unfolding of events in my personal and professional life. These events eventually led to the discovery of nature's important role in balancing today's digital intake, and how it can act as an antidote to our digital dependency. Furthermore, this presentation will examine the many physical and psychological benefits of ensuring our children have contact with a natural environment and the time to play unplugged.

Bread & Puppet Theater Field Trip
Bread and Puppet begins its summer season with weekly performances of The Diagonal Life Circus & Normality Rebellion Pageant starting on July 7th. These shows explore the generic verticality that we as individuals and as a society participate in, and present the diagonal as an alternative to that verticality. According to Bread and Puppet director, Peter Schumann, “Diagonals are created from the leaning power of hurt verticals,” and the Circus & Pageant speak to this by displaying the power of hurt verticality. The shows will be performed outdoors, with the circus occurring in a natural amphitheater made from a grown-over sand quarry and the pageant in the spaces around the top of the amphitheater, which include a pine forest and an expansive field. The circus is accompanied by live music, from fiddle to brass band and Georgian songs to Dixieland Jazz. The circus company is made up of 50-100 puppeteers, who work together to combine their skills and personal passions into many several-minute acts that, when placed back-to-back, make up the show. The pageant is a longer, more abstract piece that interacts thoughtfully with the landscape and audience to give a sense of closure after the speed and excitement of the circus. The day begins with side-shows at 2p.m. in the circus field, with the circus field store open for purchase of posters, banners, books, and postcards. The circus begins at 3p.m., signalled by the opening brass band tunes and the traditional first flag act. After the circus at around 4p.m., audience members are directed towards the beginning of the pageant, which runs for another hour until 5p.m. At that point, fresh-baked rye bread and aioli are served in the bread house in the field, and guest performances take place in the Paper-Maché Cathedral when the museum bell rings. Throughout the day, the circus field store, museum store, and cheap art bus remain open and selling posters, banners, books, and postcards. The event in total runs from 2p.m. to around 6p.m. Bread and Puppet begins Circus & Pageant performances alongside Friday Night Shows in the Paper Maché Cathedral, Shape-note Sings on Tuesdays, and a smattering of Circus performances in various locations around New England. All performances are by cash or check donation with no-one turned away for lack of funds. The puppet museum is open from 10a.m. to 6p.m. daily in the summer, and the museum store and cheap art bus are open and self-serve by the honor system. The Circus & Pageant run every Sunday through August 25th at the Bread and Puppet Theater, 753 Heights Road, Glover, VT. Parking is in the circus field for the show, with accessible parking spaces available on request. Dogs are welcome if they are well-behaved and leashed, and kids generally enjoy the show as much as adults. The suggested donation for all shows is $10-20, but no-one will be turned away – we would much rather have audience members than money.

Authentic Assessment
At the Bellwether School, a holistic education school in Williston, VT, we believe that the primary purpose of assessment is for the teacher to plan instruction, not to make comparisons between students. We have no letter grades, preferring to describe students as learners broadly and deeply in narrative form and through work sampling. By employing this type of assessment and instruction, teachers respect unique learning styles while ensuring that every student continues to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. In this workshop, you’ll learn more about why and how to use Authentic Assessment as a valuable tool in any education setting.
